Their journey from the asteroid belt to Earth is one of the greatest tales of survival, outlasting both the intense heat and pressure of traversing through our atmosphere and the impact with our planet's surface. Collisions and gravitational interactions between asteroids can send smaller sections into the inner solar system where they can intersect with Earth’s orbit to become part of the thousands of meteorites that fall to earth. The Earth collides with thousands of small pieces of this material from outer space creating the sporadic shooting stars and fireball meteors seen at night. Meteorites fall through the atmosphere at such high velocity that material burns off their exterior. This melting leaves a glassy outer coating called a fusion crust. The fusion crust is usually a dark gray to charcoal black in color. Black fusion crust can be shiny or a dull velvety texture. History Siderite Meteorites usually consist of two mineral phases: kamacite and taenite. Most originate from cores of planetesimals. Siderite meteorites were historically used for their meteoric iron, which was forged into cultural objects, tools or weapons. In Ancient Egypt and other civilizations before the Iron Age, iron was as valuable as gold, since both came from meteorites, for example Tutankhamun's meteoric iron dagger. The Inuit used the Cape York meteorite for a much longer time. Siderite meteorites themselves were sometimes used unaltered as collectibles or even religious symbols (e.g. Clackamas worshiping the Willamette meteorite). Today siderite meteorites are prized collectibles for academic institutions and individuals. Some are also tourist attractions as in the case of the Hoba meteorite. Occurrence Although they are fairly rare compared to the stony meteorites, comprising only about 5.8% of witnessed falls, siderite meteorites have historically been heavily over-represented in meteorite collections.This is due to several factors: Easily recognized as unusual, as opposed to stony meteorites. Modern-day searches for meteorites in deserts and Antarctica yield a much more representative sample of meteorites overall.More resistant to weathering.They are more likely to survive atmospheric entry, and are more resistant to the resulting ablation. Which is why, they are more likely to be found as large pieces. Can be found even when buried by use of surface metal detecting equipment, due to their metallic composition.
